A Personal Perspective of the Ojibwa Culture
I've researched and written about various aspects of Ojibwa culture but the following stories are interpretations of the roles of men, women and children from my very personal perspective. These particular stories aren't about the Ojibwa who lived before Europeans came to this continent. These tales are about my life in the bush north of Lake Superior almost seventy years ago.
Growing up at my mother's side I absorbed ideas about what it was to be a Ojibwa Woman, and I interpreted what it meant to be an Ojibwa Man. My first hand experience of being an Ojibwa Child will probably remind you of your own childhood - the fun times, the rivalries, the grudging completion of chores.
My stories are often of mundane events...having a bath, going to school, visiting the dentist...but I had to melt snow and heat it on the stove before bathing, often went to school by dog team, and visited a dentist whose tiny office was built into the back end of a railway car!
These are some of those stories that may help you understand my childhood world.
